BRAWLEY — The football faithful not only got a chance to help raise money for the Brawley Union High Wildcats, they also got to play some golf in the process at the Jim Skipper Gridiron Classic Golf tournament here at the Del Rio Country Club golf course Saturday.

The weather cooperated and the Brawley community showed up in full along with Jim Skipper, who is the assistant head coach of the Carolina Panthers and a Brawley graduate.

“It was a fantastic day out here. The community turned out and it is for a great cause,” Skipper said. “And for me being (an alumnus) of Brawley, I am glad to be here.”

Skipper paired with Carson Seybert for the second year in a row. Seybert said they couldn’t have had a better time.

“It was just a great day. I had fun and I know Jim (Skipper) did today,” Seybert said. “This tournament is doing well and I think it is starting to build off itself and with Jim being out here it just makes it even more enjoyable.”

This tournament was started by Seybert’s father, the late Clark Seybert, as a means to raise money for the Brawley Union High football team. Tournament committee member Larry Fleming is glad to be able to help Brawley athletics.

“I just had a lot of fun today and that’s what it was about,” Fleming said. “It’s good to know that we are not only helping the football team but other Brawley athletics in the process. Overall this is just a successful tournament and we hope to keep it that way.”

The tournament awarded the winner in both the net division and the gross division. The winning team was Don and Steve Emanuelli with a net score of 57. And in the gross division the winning team was Andrew Currier and Ryan Maring who came into the clubhouse with a 65.

But one of the big winners of the day had to be Daniel Hagen. Hagen delivered a hole-in-one on the fifth hole to win a set of golf clubs.

“After I hit I was thinking, man, I’m thankful it was even close to the hole,” Hagen said.

This was Hagen’s second time playing a whole round of golf so the hole-in-one not only surprised him but everybody else as well. When asked if he was going to start playing golf more often, he offered up a less than surprising response.

“Yeah, I think I definitely need to start playing more,” Hagen said. “The funny thing about all this is going into the day I was borrowing a pair of clubs but hey, now I have my own.”

For another year the Gridiron Classic has been nothing short of a success and the way Skipper sees it, he doesn’t think that is ever going to change.

“I can and I will be back next year and plan to be here for every one after that so mark it on your calendar,” he said.
