Imperial Valley College has no wireless system?

Thursday, May 8, 2008 10:42 PM PDT

QUESTION: I am a student at Imperial Valley College and was wondering why there is no wireless Internet access for all students? I understand that there are computers with Internet access on campus. However, these computers are not always available due to the use of other students. It is apparent that when I’ve asked some staff why there is no wireless Internet available to students, no one knows. They also added that I’m not the only student who has been asking why IVC does not provide this service to all college students — Concerned Student, Imperial County.

Officials at Imperial Valley College said they are trying to upgrade their facilities for faculty and students. That said, there is no wireless system in place, said Jeff Cantwell, director of application services at the community college. But Cantwell assured that officials are “looking for a complete wireless solution for the college but that is not in place at this time.”

Cantwell couldn’t say with certitude when that solution might come but said the improvement would hopefully come “this year.”

“It’s part of our upgrade for the campus infrastructure,” which includes Internet access, computer modifications and telephone systems, Cantwell said.

Gordon Bailey, IVC’s director of technical services, countered that there is a wireless network but that the college “is looking at bids and looking to improve” its wireless availability. “It’s an upgrade,” Bailey said.

Neither college official gave a time when improvements or upgrades would occur.

Bailey suggested that there may be some confusion between wireless Internet and Internet connections. Students can now use an area at the cafeteria on campus designated for computers that have a direct Internet connection, Bailey said.

" Most of the books in the library were published back in 1986 so think again any time you choose to use the "it's called a library" comment. The computers are filled up because of people on myspace and like I said earlier books are out of date. Wireless internet, please. "

" Zanelisk, could you please expand on your comment about IVROP please? I am not sure I got your point but I am interested in hearing more about it! "

" Why not the library, use it it may surprise you how much information you can gather. We wonder why people don't want to read books anymore, technology has made it too easy for us all to procrastinate. "

" As a matter of fact there are a couple of elementary schools around the valley that have a wireless internet system. Why can't an institution of higher learning be prepared for those that are coming in? Great points by Zanelisk. Look at what students are steered to major in, to help support the lower levels of social economic status. Ag program, it's an agricultural area we live in and they recently revived it, what is wrong with the administrators in this community we live in. "

" Your talking about a learning institution that thinks radio transmissions from aliens are broadcast on am from Mexicalli. In the most agricultural area of California IVC has only recently revived its Ag programs. Degree programs in Agriculture could lessen the brain-drain that occurs here. You have to go elsewhere to get any kind of an Ag degree consequently, you dont return. IVC is run by the liberal faculty, emphasis is on give away programs based on lifting the poor and disadvantaged (IVROP) up to minimun wage status. It should concentrate on producing graduates who seek high end salaries. Perpetuating a minimum wage society only ensures the valley will continue to finish last among salaries and academics. What are some of the most popular degree paths at IVC now? We graduate a plethora of welfare social workers, child development welfare techs (day care providers) and all the liberal arts. Lets get real, practical and forward looking and start graduating some high enders. Start with what every other college in America already has, wireless internet. "

" Internet access shouldn't be lagging at IVC. Just as easy as they can put routers in the classroom, the should place them around campus. All they have to do is give access to students. Many already have wireless laptops that will pick up the wireless frequency. So when does track season start? "

" Maybe Probe could find out why IVC spent bond money on a high tech rubberized running track, with lanes and starting pads and everything.....WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE A TRACK TEAM!!!! Hell, spend the money on a subway stop or a helipad...it makes as much sense. "

" " Grow up and buy a Spint Card. Who says the State should provide you with FREE access? "

Considering that they pay tuition and fees, it makes sense that this should be available, especially if the computer labs are full. It's good to see that IVC is working on it. "

" You have to remmeber how greedy IVC is also, why would they allow that for students. "
