Our Opinion: Kudos to the citizens of Calipatria

Sunday, January 27, 2008 9:51 PM PST

THUMBS UP to the local citizens in Calipatria who helped police nab four teens suspected of burglarizing a home.

A woman walking her dog saw the teens leaving the home called police to report the crime. After two of the teens were caught, another resident alerted police and let them know where the other two were hiding, thanks to the resident’s barking dog.

All of the teens now face charges, and this crime was solved thanks to a couple of citizens who weren’t afraid to get involved. And often that’s what it takes to stop crime. Police need everyone’s help to make our communities as safe as possible.

THUMBS DOWN to Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, whose romantic text messages with a top aide were released last week after he denied in court the two were having an affair.

Kilpatrick, who is married, denied in a court case the he and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty were romantically involved. The text messages prove otherwise.

Kilpatrick should resign immediately and be prosecuted for perjury.

We don’t expect our public officials to be perfect, but we do expect them to tell the truth. Kilpatrick didn’t and should be punished for it.

THUMBS UP To the Holtville Athletic Club, for once again staging a hit in the Holtville Rib Cook-off.

Thousands of people from all over the Imperial Valley converged on Samaha Park in Holtville on Saturday to partake what were surely some of the best barbecued pork ribs this side of the Mississippi.

But it wasn’t just about the food. Again, all the money raised at the cook-off went to youth athletic organizations and youth activities. Good job, everyone involved.

THUMBS UP and good luck to Central Union High School’s Great Spartan Band, which for the first time since 1999 is going back to New Orleans to participate in Mardi Gras.

This is the 30th anniversary of the first year the Great Spartan Band was invited to Bourbon Street.

The Spartans leave this week, so wish ’em well.

" Yes it is unfortunate that the Spartan band cannot march in the Brawley cattle call parade. As you can see i wrote, "cannot," because of the way the band is treated every time they did march in the parade. The citizens of Brawley decide to throw orange peels and other objects as the band marches by, so as i see it this is not a case of "sore losers" as it is a case of "bad winners." "

" The Spartans are SORE sports for NOT participating the the Brawley Cattle Call parade. It would have even made them look better after losing the Bell. Shame on them! They should be taught to be more positive & good natured! "

" i think it's sad that the great spartan band perfoms in New Orleans but not in Brawley for the cattle call parade. The Spartan Band is one of the greatest marching bands in the valley, and I am proud that they are going to represent the valley at mardi gras. "
