Border Patrol agent leaves behind family

Monday, January 21, 2008 10:20 PM PST

ANDRADE — The U.S. Border Patrol agent who was killed in the line of duty near Andrade on Saturday was a father of two small children and husband, officials said Sunday.

Senior Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar was 32 and was assigned to the Yuma Border Patrol Station since graduating from the Border Patrol Academy on July 21, 2002, officials said. He also leaves behind a brother, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the Nogales Border Patrol Station. He was from El Paso, Texas.

The news of Aguilar’s death affected local agents assigned to the El Centro sector.

“It’s another reminder of the risks that the Border Patrol faces every day to secure our nation’s borders. This despicable act is something to remind our agents we have to be alert and vigilant at all times because things like this can happen at any time,” said El Centro Sector Senior Patrol Agent Enrique Lozano. He and other agents in the field were wearing mourning bands across their shields Monday.

Aguilar died when a fleeing suspected narcotics smuggler driving a brown Hummer ran over him as the six-year veteran attempted to deploy a tire deflation device at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area near Andrade at about 9:30 a.m., Border Patrol officials said.

Officials are looking for the vehicle and a red Ford F-250 pickup that fled into Mexico in connection to the death.

Aguilar is the first Border Patrol agent to be killed in the line of duty in 2008.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said Aguilar’s death will only inspire the agency to continue to secure the nation’s borders.

“We are already working today with support from many federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and the full cooperation of Mexican law enforcement and military authorities to find Agent Aguilar’s killers and bring them to justice,” Basham said in a press release late Saturday.

" bradjmellon: excellent posts. Well said.

Royalcan: Good post. I agree with what you said and I generally like and support the BP. You must admit though, what ThatLatinGuy said regarding that IA's will do the fieldwork no one else wants to do is correct. I've personally NEVER seen a Black, Asian, nor White man out in the fields of Imperial Valley.
As mentioned in a previous post, if we could ever find a way to LOWER demand for drugs, that would go a long ways of taking care of the drug problem for BOTH sides of the border.

Personally, I hope they extradite the culprit, and if up to me, I would personally plunge the fatal injection into his sorry arm. "

" royalcan, Thank you... you worded it so perfect. Thank you. I feel the same for my spouse. In no other law enforcement are you not allowed to defend yourself in the manner you should than the border patrol and yet have so many who accuse them of being prejudice and unjust. Again thank you. "

" CONTINUED: My husband (and other agents) do this because it is their passion. They are committed to protecting our borders, even at the risk of losing their lives. They do it because they love the United States of America and WANT to protect it. So, Mr.ThatLatinGuy, let's not glorify the work that ILLEGAL aliens do, especially to the sacrifice all law enforcement officers make. There can be no comparison! Mr. Luis Aguilar proved that!!!
Agent Aguilar and my husband worked together. They were friends.(And, to all the other bloggers who have written such heartfelt, supportive comments, I have read them to my husband. It made him feel better to know others cared. Thank you for taking the time to write. ) "

royalcan wrote on Jan 22, 2008 5:35 PM:

" Mr.ThatLatinGuy, You comment how illegal aliens are the ones who get up early in the cold weather to work the fields because no other ethnicity will do that. How about the Border Patrol agents who work required ten-hour shifts in the middle of the night in freezing temperature, holding their spotlights out their open windows while they check the sand for footprints or work ten-hour shifts in 110 degree weather wearing a twenty pound gun belt and full uniform, crawling under brush (which is littered with trash and human feces) looking for hiding illegal aliens? Do you know what a war wagon is? It's a Border Patrol vehicle with metal bars covering the windows which agents drive along the border. The bars protect the windows from being broken by the rocks being hurled at the agents from Mexico. Every week, when I kiss my spouse good bye, I smell his hair, remember how his arms felt around me, and make sure I tell him how much he means to our family. Mr.ThatLatinGuy, have you ever wondered if this will be the last time you will ever hold your spouse? I do--every week. "

" LatinGuy ! Thank you for your civil contribution to this discussion - hopefully I'm not too ignorant or uneducated to understand your perspective. Surprisingly, I do agree with you. The jobs Americans won't do are here in the Valley - and WE do pay the illegal aliens a trivial amount of money to perform that work. That is our contribution to the illegal alien problem. Mexico's contribution is to continue to be a flailing Third World country who see the United States as their welfare system. The Mexican citizens who come to this country for no other reason than to take advantage of what we have to offer - but are unwilling to assimilate into our society should not be surprised when all we do is take advantage of what they have to offer. The blame for the border problems lie with those on both sides of the fence whose lives are motivated by greed and selfishness. "

" I feel more strongly than ever now that the two agents in prison should be pardoned immediately. I have also thought these smugglers, drug or human, should be met with deadly force once they cross that border. That would do more good than any fence. Planting a few of them will start getting their attention. Nothing else is working. They know if one of "theirs" is injured or killed, one of "ours" will go to prison. What kind of message are we sending to these no good low-lifes? It's ok for them, but not ok for us is what we're telling them. This country needs to buck up and take responsubility for what's happening on our border. This agent should not have died because we're too "civilized" to take appropriate action. God Bless the Aguilar family. "

gymjunkie wrote on Jan 22, 2008 10:12 AM:

" Bradjmellon you are sounding like Presidente Fox who said The mexicans are only delivering drugs because we buy them. Sheesh. Blame it on the U.S. If it hadn't been a drug smuggling idiot who killed this BP agent it would have been something else. The fact is the border problem is out of hand with BP agents afraid to take action against smugglers of drugs and humans because they don't want to go to jail. Those scum should have been met with lethal force as soon as they crossed over. Whether or not they were illegals or coyotes it is time to start sending a message, this is a war and standing by with spike strips and words isn't going to cut it. I hope we elect a president with cajones to do just that. "

Prov3 wrote on Jan 22, 2008 10:09 AM:

ThatLatinGuy wrote on Jan 22, 2008 9:34 AM:

" This is a very sad loss and may God console this family in their loss.
True this "war" is our backyard but it's not the only border where drugs of all sorts come through. Also, some or many of those who claim to want this "backyard war" to be won are also high on the same contraband that comes across.....and yes, Americans are the pushers of these drugs here on American soil to make a living. So don't just blame/label illegal IMMIGRANTS as doing the jobs Americans won't do. Those jobs that most Americans won't due are in the valley. They are being done while you sleep in and wake up late cause it's either to cold or too hot or too early....what ever the case, when was the last time you saw any other kind of ethnicity out picking the lettuce you put on your sandwich other than being Latino?!? The cost of living is more affordable in the valley because of these immigrant workers and you are too ignorant or uneducated to see....get you heads out of the sand and read about the rest of our nation and how immigrants contribute for the good andnotjustfocusonthebad "

" Excellent, excellent post bradjmellon!!! I totally agree that if any of you reading this are drug users, you definitely had a hand in this agent's death. Such a shame a wife, her two children and this agent's family have been sentenced to a lifetime of suffering because of the drug users in this country. Should make them all proud. But then, if you're using drugs, you're brainless anyway and could care less about anything or anybody but your own stupid, selfish and self-destructive lifestyle. My heart and prayers go out to this agent's family. What a senseless loss of life just so too many idiots can snort, smoke and stick crap in their veins. Makes me sick. "

bradjmellon wrote on Jan 22, 2008 7:03 AM:

" We lost another soldier to the war this weekend. This time the soldier wore a Border Patrol uniform and the war was in our own backyard. He was killed by a two legged animal who fled back into Mexico across a wide open border carrying his cargo of illegal narcotics. We can only assume this is just one more illegal alien performing a job Americans won't do ! But he is not the only one who committed this murder. Every American who has ever lit up a joint, snorted a line of coke or injected a syringe loaded with heroin aided and abetted in this murder. Without YOU, your "friends" in Mexico wouldn't have a customer for thier national export and they wouldn't have a need to kill those soldiers that are, ironically, working to protect your sorry butt as well. So, the next time you indulge in your "harmless' drug to escape your reality for awhile, take a moment to wonder how a widow and two fatherless children are going to escape the reality you have made for them. "
