50,000 open dunes season

Sunday, October 28, 2007 10:01 PM PDT

IMPERIAL COUNTY SAND DUNES RECREATIONAL AREA — About 50,000 visitors made their way to the Imperial County Sand Dunes Recreational Area during the weekend and at least another 40,000 are expected next weekend, according to Bureau of Land Management officials.

In this, the opening weekend of the dunes season, about half as many people were out as there were last year, said BLM public information officer Steve Razo.

Because Halloween was closer to the weekend last year, about 100,000 people were estimated to have been in the dunes during opening weekend, Razo said.

With Halloween, the traditional open of the dunes season, falling in the middle of the week, Razo said there was an expected split this and next weekend.

He said so far, as of Sunday morning, there had been 353 total incidents reported.

Those varied from safety violations to citations, he said.

One fatality was reported. On Thursday a 25-year-old man suffered fatal injuries after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving went off a 60-foot dune.

There have been 32 medical aids in the north dunes and 20 in the south, Razo said.

About 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Razo said, there was an unlawful assembly at Oldsmobile Hill in the Glamis area.

He said there were no issues with the dispersing of the crowd.

“Other than that it’s been a pretty quiet weekend,” Razo said.

A full weekend update will be provided later today.

" cinoreah, you expect no traffic when you live on the MAIN STREET. They call it main street for a reason;) You don't like the prices at those two gas stations, go somewhere else. If enough cusotmers go elsewhere, they will lower their price. The additional sales taxes come from additional revenue which justifies additional jobs. People with jobs spend money and around and around it goes. Even with the by-pass, Brawley businesses will do their best to bring them in to their stores. "

" Cinoreah is correct. 2011 is the anticipated date for completion of the bypass. Then we'll read about all of the Brawley businesses who are complaining about a lack of business because the new road took the traffic out of town. The ones that won't complain are the those who had the foresight to relocate closer to the new road and those who offer services that dune visitors need with larger parking lots. The rest will be happy that no one is blocking their driveway. "

" IF the extension gets finished by then. I thought kayro may have been talking about the rumored crackdown by the EPA on emissions on vehicles by 2012, and wondered if the plan had been released and I had not heard about it. If the bypass gets done, we will still have high Dune traffic until someone builds a truckstop with stores along the bypass. Despite what Cinoreah states many of these people shop in Brawley. One of the biggest reasons is it is almost impossible to maneuver a large toyhauler through parking lots and streets in other counties. Cinoreah, you homework comment is old. BTW AM/PM on the edge of town is 4 cents more expensive than the 7/11 on K, horrible price gouging there. As for the south corner they were changing the signs, so I didn't see what they were charging, but according to you they are owned by the same person and charge the same amount, after my truck, quads, and trailer filled from empty that would be a $3 difference from anywhere else. For the convenience of a station I can pull through, get firewood, and 111 octane gas without driving to imperial, well worthit "

" Do your homework burn....the bypass extension will be completed then. "

" Kayro, I agree this is the best time of the year. People complain of the valley's weather for five months not appreciating we have the best weather in the nation the rest of the year. And the desert is still the best pasttime despite all the problems that have arisen in recent years. But why will things continue until 2011, what is happening that year? "

burn33 wrote on Oct 30, 2007 11:16 AM:

" Obviously, cinoreah, you have some sort of problem with duners and are turning a prejudiced eye toward the issue. Those stores I mentioned recieve tons of business from duners. So you can agree to disagree, and I will agree you are wrong. As for my comment of side streets, it was mentioned as an option for avoiding trying to parallel park on main street. Plenty of parking behind Billiards, the old Vitality health club, E, and G, streets etc. I hope, based on your comments that you never go to San Diego in the summer, and inconvenience the people that live close to the beach, attributing to their traffic congestion, and taking up all the parking. "

kayro14 wrote on Oct 30, 2007 11:02 AM:

" Cooler weather has returned and it's time to hit the dunes! Some will complain because their little world is negatively impacted by an influx of visitors. Those problems may not be resolved soon enough for everyone but progress is being made. A gas station or any other business will charge what the market will bear. That's just basic economics. Twenty to fifty thousand or more visitors to any area on a consistent basis for 5 months is good for any region, especially Imperial County. It's part of the circle of life. The dunes attract visitors, visitors need food, drinks, fuel and other things. Local stores supply those things for visitors to buy and the stores suppliers deliver the goods. When stores are selling and suppliers are delivering, people are employed and everyone gets a slice of the pie. As a local resident and dunes enthusiast, October through April is my favorite time of year. If getting out of my driveway was that big of an issue, I'd consider moving because the dunes aren't going anywhere and neither are the trucks or the toy hauling caravans until 2011. "

cinoreah wrote on Oct 30, 2007 10:58 AM:

" We spend a lot of time at Chabelas's and not one time have we seen duners (you can can always tell who they are) and seldom ever anybody at Rincons. Have seen a few hunters at Chabela's but no duners. Christine's maybe, but lack of parking hurts all of these businesses. Have seen some at Brownies but the vast majority are always at McD's or Jack. As to your comment about taking side streets, have you seen anybody trying to parallel park in the 5 and 600 blocks of Main with all this traffic? Horns honking, arms waving and the like. It is a literal nightmare for the locals. So your little comment about that was a bit uncalled for. As I said before, we have always shopped for the best gas prices and its not been on those two corner stations for a very long time. Living a block from them, we are well aware of their inflated prices. You, your friends and I will just have to agree to disagree on this. And just for the record, during the last gas price spike some time ago, they raised their prices 3 times in ONE day. "

burn33 wrote on Oct 29, 2007 11:08 PM:

" While I have not filled up there for the past week, i will allow that what you say may be true, but continually during the summer, I filled both my truck and my boat there many times, driving from my house by the hospital I have the chance to see almost every station on the way out to the river. And yes, for many months those two stations were always cheaper than the rest in town. I called some of my co-workers, many of which go to the river and dunes also, and they all agreed those two stations had the better prices all summer. Maybe they have changed for the duners. If I was towing a 5th wheel, I would gladly pay extra to be able to enter and exit a station conveniently. I noticed you managed to slip in that I am full of dung, and have no idea what I am talking about, but you ignored all the other points I made. The duners are good for business, and good for the valley. They are here to stay, and you need to quit complaining. "

cinoreah wrote on Oct 29, 2007 8:21 PM:

" And to add further...I lived in this same place long before AM/PM was built. You're right that they WERE cheaper than most, UNTIL they were bought out by C&C. We drove the ONE block to buy our gas at AM/PM, but when ownership changed, they brought their prices up to within 3 or 4 cents of C&C...still higher than everybody else. For a long time now we have driven into town to buy our gas...so you are wrong about them being CONSISTENTLY cheaper than everybody else. I just told my husband what you said and he said 'BS, he/she's full of sh!t and doesn't know what he/she/s talking about'. We have 4 vehicles, both personal and business, so we have to follow gas prices closely. And BTW...your comment about what I'm on was uncalled for as I know what I'm talking about and you obviously don't. "

cinoreah wrote on Oct 29, 2007 7:48 PM:

" burn33....those 2 stations ARE 20 cents higher than everybody else. Currently and for the past few days, they are 3.25 and 3.29.....everybody else is 3.09 with the exception of Shell at 3.19, who is usually the highest, but they have been outdone by the corner stations. Have trouble with math do you? AM/PM used to be a lot cheaper, but since they were bought out by C&C Gas they are now among the highest. Do your homework. "

burn33 wrote on Oct 29, 2007 6:03 PM:

" Cinoreah, what are you on? The two stations at the edge of town are consistently a few cents cheaper than anywhere else in Brawley. As for the benefit of local businesses, try getting food at Christine's, El Rincon, Chabela's or any other resturaunt on main street on a Sunday, full of duners. Von's may be a chain, but their employee's are local, and sure benefit from the added sales. The donut shop in the Von's center does well also. If we ever do get the bypass built we are going to feel the lack of business far worse than we feel the traffic congestion we have now. As for getting through town, you are local, and probably don't have a 5th wheel trailer behind you, side streets anyone? "

cinoreah wrote on Oct 29, 2007 12:28 PM:

" And I might add, the two gas stations on the corner of 111 & Main always manage to make sure they get mega bucks. They are 20 cents a gallon higher than any other station in Brawley. Always happens when its time for the duners to come. Price gouging at its best. And BTW....they are both owned by the same out of town owner. "

cinoreah wrote on Oct 29, 2007 12:19 PM:

" $$$$$$$$$$$$$ for who? Oil companies, out of town/chain convenience store owners, chain fast food joints? Only way it helps is the added sales tax base. As for a chill pill lucylls....try getting in and out of your driveway in a timely manner and can't, then get back to me. No town's Main street should be clogged with as much traffic as Brawley has. Between the trucks and duners, Main street is nothing short of outright dangerous. And polo87, long lines at the stations translates to them blocking traffic trying to get into these stations. These duners are a menace to traffic in more ways than one. "

" Its a freakin' nightmare with these duners coming through Brawley. Lines and lines as far as you can see coming and going east and west. I live on the eastern edge of Brawley and we can't even get out of our driveway there are so damn many of them!!!!! And don't even think about getting in a hurry going through town. Also don't plan to get into the gas stations on a Friday night either. This week it started on Thursday night. I love to see cooler weather but I don't like what it brings as far as traffic from these duners. Gawd, how we need that 111 Expressway extension to bypass Brawley!! "
